TV: Should we fear AI taking our jobs
Published: Friday 28th of November 2025
My appearance on TRT World Roundtable explored how AI is transforming the European job market, with a key takeaway that while AI will displace some jobs, it is also expected to create new roles and increase productivity. The consensus suggests a period of significant job transformation rather than mass, long-term unemployment.
Key Insights from the Discussion:
Job Displacement vs. Creation: While some studies predict millions of job losses in Europe (e.g., up to 3 million low-skilled jobs in the UK by 2035), these losses are expected to be offset by new jobs created in the tech sector and other areas.
Transformation, Not Elimination: My fellow experts and I suggest that most existing jobs will be augmented by AI, rather than completely eliminated. The real challenge is the need for rapid reskilling and a focus on human skills like creativity and community engagement that AI cannot replicate.
Most Affected Sectors: Jobs involving routine cognitive tasks are most vulnerable to automation. These include roles in administration, customer service, data entry, and sales. Highly skilled jobs that are exposed to AI may also be affected, but often in ways that increase efficiency. Entry-level and graduate jobs are seeing the largest slowdown, which in turn will create a skill development issue for the future, further emphasising our point that reskilling should be the priority..
